I have made sushi before with my friends! Thats what we do sometimes, we get together on a friday or saturday night, have a few drinks and catch up with each other. While making sushi.....................
Its easy to do is not very expensive and good food, low in fat too! Anyway my tips are don't roll too much in the sushi roll, don't make too big like I do! Everyone laughs at my sushi rolls..............hahahahahaha
And you need those bamboo mats to roll it with as well. For fish use salmon and tuna! You can skip the mayonaise...........its full of fat and I am allergic to preservatives too so I never eat it! Its great without mayo! And don't be afraid to mix up different combos with it, once I mixed everything all together after a few drinks and everyone liked mine the best............................

can i chime in on this one...............

u can put anything u want in ur rolls... tuna/salmon,lobster , usually imitation, shrimp...
its very easy..... u can go to a grocery store..and in the international section u'll find sushi kits.. which include the bamboo sheet..its what u need to roll it with..

first off u need Japanese rice.aka sticky rice....... u cook it 2 parts waters, to one part rice...and add vinegar.. cook it down to sticky consistancy..and cool....

when its cooled.. lay ur nori (seaweed sheets) on ur bamboo roller (dampen the bamboo ...u dont want any splinters) then add a layer of rice...... then ur filler... cucumber, carrot..ANYTHING u want.....and cut them into long strips..so they fill up the center of the square of rice/nori.....now roll....... make sure u got some wasabi on hand lol...i love it....

Another thing....is that unless ur buying ur fish from a seafood market who is not getting it straight in..i'd do some thinking about using tuna/salmon........... when i order tuna......i ask for sashimi grade..or sushi grade.. basically..its fresh out the water....and u can eat..not much room for bacteria growth... the fish u buy in grocery stores...has been stored and frozen...i dont trust it personally..on the flip side..imitation meats are always acceptable....

hope this helps....

Exactly! Guess I dont have to explain now LOL....Sushi is very popular here......I myself like spicy tuna or tuna rolls with wasabe and soy sauce.....California rolls are my next best choice (crab/cucmber/avacado).....

Then thers canned tuna and ume and salmon oh and lets not forget the ole SPAM roll LOL.....

Thanks Chef, that's great info. I'll search out a fish market and see if they carry sushi grade fish.

Just be carefull! With certain fish, you have to cut them a certain way to avoid contamination from their digestive track.
I'm not sure which ones, but I used to work with a sushi chef and that's what he said to me when i suggested that i would make my own.
