A little computer help.

Ok, I (unfortunately) have Vista. I am the only account on my PC therefore, I'm the administrator.

Here's the rub: I have a few files that I downloaded and cannot erase because they are listed as read-only. Now, I have gone in and TRIED to change this and every time it comes back as read only.

Even when I've tried to erase these files I get a message telling me that I need admin privileges to complete this task. I am the freakin admin!

I've checked my account under "User Accounts" and I have full control over everything. I cannot figure out why this keeps happening.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

TWO STEP SOLUTION

1. Throw away your PC

2. Get a MAC

Bump this... if not, it could be 1 of 2 other things..

1 it's a virused file
2 the program that the file belongs to ie: word, pdf etc was meant to be read-only so you cannot change the file or print it. Some pdf files, are read-only and as stated you can only read them and not make changes or even print!

There maybe programs that will override exsisting properties so you can modify said files... I did a search for my own personal problem that was the same, I had to get a pdf changed from r-o.

OK bro, I am not well versed in Vista at all but... In Windows xp starting the operating sys in safe mode and then going in and deleting the files is possible but you first have to add your user id to the list of id's allowed to access the files. In safe mode, Right click on the files you want to access and open the security tab click on advanced and find the search for available users to add, add your user account name to the list even if it appears to already be there as it will allow you to do this. After adding your user name to list you should be able to access the files for deleting. You may need to do this for each file you want to erase. Remember I don't know if this works on Vista at all. I don't have a Mac but I suggest going back to Windows XP.

Thanks, but I did that ten times and it keeps coming back as read-only.

1. I'd hate to think that it has a virus, my anti-virus is pretty good (NOD32).
2. I agree, some have security measures that prohibit certain functions.

Thanks guys.

Unfortunately, I have done this several times and thats where the problem comes in, I am the admin and the stupid file refuses to delete. I've changed the read-only feature many times and when I go to wipe the file it asks for admin privileges again.
Thanks.

delete it from DOS ...

hit f8 at start up
go to command prompt
go to the location of the file typing c:\ whatever ...
then del complete filename including extension

that should do it.

If not ... well i dont know if you want to trust me, i would'nt, but if you choose to and I am online, i could remote into your system and see whats up. Again its not something i would recommend ... but its your choice.
