im a cheap bastard so i find the cheapest gb in town, usually super wal mart.
i usually buy like 85% to 90% and fry it up in the pan, then put that in a plastic strainer and microwave for 35 secs. this takes all the grease out into a bowl underneath. |

doesnt matter what % of fat you get if you cook it like this
cook it in a deep pan and place water in there with it. pretty much boiling it. then after its cooked all the way take it out and place it in the strainer and rinse it off. rinse it well and toss it around and get as much fat as possible. then take the a frying pan and heat the shit out of it and flash fry it. then season it. only difference between the fat %'s is that u get less overall meat in the end with tht higher %'s. no matter what your left with lean as shit ground beef. Beef is expensive in my area so i just buy the 5lbs chubs for like $8 and its 75/25.

since winter is coming I usually have a couple guys kill a deer for me and i pay for the processing 50-60 dollars. it comes out to about $1 per pound depending on the size of the deer. |

A little late on the reply here, but you might want to look into "Textured Vegetable Protein" (TVP) from BulkFoods.com, it is 53% protein, goes for ~$2/lb (shipped free), and it mixes in with regular ground beef without giving you some kind of funny flavor. link. Extra lean ground beef is only about 20% protein by weight, so TVP is a pretty good deal, like $0.86/lb extra lean ground beef, plus there's less volume, so it's easier to eat more. Also, it doesn't go bad like fresh or frozen ground beef.

Sam's club for me too. I an extra freezer so I buy the large bulk packages of meat which is cheaper per lb than buying the smaller packages. I then divide the meat up and vacum seal it in smaller bags before freezing. For steaks, I usually buy round roast and cut it into round steaks with is cheaper than buying precut round steaks.
